Speaker Bios

Dr. Jo Viney, Co-Founder, President and CSO, Pandion Therapeutics

Dr. Viney is an entrepreneurial scientist and experienced biotech executive who has dedicated her career to the discovery and development of transformative medicines that improve patients’ lives. A self-described “drug-hunter”, she has successfully advanced numerous therapies into the clinic.

Jo most recently co-founded Pandion Therapeutics in March 2017, developing novel therapeutics designed to address the unmet needs of patients living with autoimmune disease. She served as Pandion’s President and CSO until the company was acquired by Merck in April 2021. Prior to Pandion, she worked at Immunex, Amgen, and most recently Biogen where she was Senior Vice President of the Drug Discovery organization.

Throughout her career, Jo has been an advocate for workplace inclusiveness. From 2015 to 2020, Jo served on the Board of WEST, a non-profit organization supporting early to mid-career women. She was WEST’s President for the 2017–2018 term, and she continues to be actively involved. Jo has maintained longstanding membership with the Society for Mucosal Immunology (SMI) and American Association of Immunologists (AAI). She has served numerous terms on the SMI Board, was President from 2011–2013, and Treasurer from 2018–2020. Together with SMI colleagues and Nature Publishing Group, she launched the journal Mucosal Immunology. Jo is a member of the Board of Directors for Harpoon Therapeutics and Finch Therapeutics. She also serves on the Scientific Advisory Board for HotSpot Therapeutics and the Board of Advisors for Life Science Cares.

Dr. Sherine Abdelmawla, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Akanocure Pharmaceuticals.

Dr. Abdelmawla has over 14 years of experience teaching organic chemistry in academia and conducting research in the biotechnology industry; within R&D and clinical divisions. Sherine’s research involved working on nucleic acid-based cancer therapeutics and cancer diagnostics. Sherine serves on a few boards including MatchBox Co-working Board of Directors and Ivy Tech Community College, Chemical Technology Advisory Board. Sherine holds a PhD in medicinal chemistry and molecular pharmacology from Purdue University and a BS degree with honors in pharmaceutical sciences from Cairo University, School of Pharmacy.
