Why did you start your business in North Carolina?
The genesis of the company and most of our key people have ties to North Carolina. We are a spinout of UNC. Two of our founders are physicians in the Triangle, and a vast majority of our Board and lead investors have ties to the state. For the leadership of Bivarus, it is really important that we build a sustainable company in North Carolina. We’ve had so much support from the community here that we want to be sure we give back and participate on an ongoing basis.
What is the best part about running your business in your community?
We’re located in Durham. We’ve benefited from the support of CED, Blackstone, and the universities here. There’s a thriving entrepreneurial community here in Durham and in the Triangle, and you don't have to go too far to talk to people solving the same problems that you're tackling. It is also very helpful that we have an ecosystem of service providers that provide the knowledge and talent to support entrepreneurs.
What do you believe your North Carolina community has that other startup hubs can’t offer?
We have a tapestry of advantages and benefits for entrepreneurs here in North Carolina. It isn’t just one thing. It’s everything! We have great universities that attract students and talent, great weather, and a great quality of life. All of these things work together to make this state such an attractive place to live and build a company, and it’s something other communities are trying to replicate.
