Why did you start your business in North Carolina?
We already had a surgical practice in Wilmington, which we chose for proximity to the water and quality of life. Starting Surgilūm here was a natural choice as we would not want to live anywhere else.
What is the best part about running your business in your community?
For Surgilūm, Wilmington is an ideal location. We are relatively close to our contract manufacturer (in Winston-Salem), we already had a proven record for local financing, and because of the new information that we really needed to understand, we were able to get involved with the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) at UNCW, which has proven to be extremely helpful.
What do you believe your North Carolina community has that other startup hubs can’t offer?
I think the access to knowledge is incredible. The CIE opens its doors to anyone for a nominal charge and hosts events that are excellent for gaining knowledge and making synergistic connections.
In 3 words, how would you describe the entrepreneurial culture in NC?
