Ziptronix Closes $2.3 Million in Funding
Ziptronix Inc. (www.ziptronix.com), a Triangle company that
has developed a 3D method for stacking and bonding semiconductor
chips, has raised $2.3 million in new funding from undisclosed
investors. Founded in 2000 as a spin-off from RTI International,
the company raised about $36 million from investors last
year.

Affinergy Awarded $3 Million in
Federal Grants
Durham biotechnology startup Affinergy (www.affinergy.com),
developer of coatings to improve the performance of medical
devices such as catheters and hip joints, received $3 million
in federal Small Business Innovation Research grants. The
funding includes a Phase 2 grant for $2.05 million and four
Phase 1 grants totaling more than $1 million.

Horticultural Asset Management Lands
$3.2 Million B Round
Horticultural Asset Management Inc. (www.moneygrowsontrees.com),
a Cary-based company that estimates landscaping values primarily
for the insurance and real estate industries, raised $3.2
million in Series B financing. The funds will be used to
expand commercial activity and promote products that provide
valuations, inspections and remedial services for trees
and shrubs.
Phase Bioscience Secures $1 Million
Loan, Expands Headquarters
Phase Bioscience Inc. (www.phasebio.com),
a Durham-based biotechnology company, closed a $1-million
secured equipment loan with Silicon Valley Bank and is moving to larger headquarters and laboratory facilities in Morrisville.

Red Hat Buys Amentra
Raleigh-based Red Hat (www.redhat.com), a Linux and open
source technology provider, acquired Virginia-based Amentra,
a provider of systems integration services. The acquisition
expands Red Hat’s JBoss middleware business. Amentra (www.amentra.com)
employs 140 people and will operate as an independent Red
Hat company. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Metabolon Partners with European Group
RTP based Metabolon, Inc. is partnering with the
European Group for the Study of Insulin Resistance (EGIR)
to accelerate pre-diabetes diagnosis development. The collaboration
with EGIR will help Metabolon accelerate the development
of Quantose™ IR, its diagnostic test for better screening
of pre-diabetic patients.

Misys Healthcare Merging with Allscripts in $330
Million Deal
Misys Healthcare (www.misyshealthcare.com), healthcare records
software company that employs about 700 people in Raleigh,
will merge with Chicago-based Allscripts in a deal valued
at $330 million. Misys Healthcare is the U.S. arm of UK-based
Misys PLC.
BD Plans $134 Million Expansion
BD, (www.bd.com) — formerly
known as Becton, Dickinson and Co.— a medical technology
company in New Jersey, expand three Durham N.C. operations
and plans to build a new plant in Wilson. The company will
invest $134.7 million over the next five years and could
qualify for $4 million in state tax rebates. BD will add
274 people to its North Carolina payroll.

Healthcare Engineering Alliance Formed
N.C. State’s Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering
(www.ise.ncsu.edu) announced the Healthcare Engineering
Alliance (HEA) among N.C. State, N.C. A&T State University,
Purdue University, University of Arkansas and the University
of South Florida. HEA will facilitate communications among
healthcare engineering research programs to bring about
transformational improvement.
