SilkRoad technology, inc. Secures $10 Million
Winston-Salem’s SilkRoad technology, inc. (www.silkroadtech.com),
provider of Web-based talent management solutions, secured
$10 million in growth capital led by new investor Azure
Capital Partners. SilkRoad will use the funds to expand
direct sales and marketing and support new product development.

Precision BioSciences Repays Seed Financing
RTP’s Precision BioSciences, Inc. (www.precisionbiosciences.com)
repaid a $750,000 interest-bearing loan from a private group
of independent investors. The funds were used to successfully
validate the core technology. The repayment was made possible
through revenue generated from Precision’s ongoing operations.

RTI to Develop Web-based Forensic Science Program
RTI International (www.rti.org/forensiced)
has been awarded a two-year cooperative agreement by the
National Institute of Justice to create and deliver Web-based
continuing education training for forensic science professionals.
The training is free and will be available through live
and virtual classrooms led by subject matter experts or
through self-paced training.
RTI International is a CED member.
Lab Escape Launches Two New Products
Asheville-based Lab Escape (www.labescape.com)
launched two new products, Heat Map Explorer Enterprise
Edition and Web Viewer Edition, which enable heat map visual
analysis capabilities to improve analysis and collaboration
in large organizations and global enterprises.
Lab Escape is a CED member.
Addrenex Files First New Drug Application
Durham-based Addrenex Pharmaceuticals, Inc., (www.addrenex.com)
filed a new drug application for CloniBID to treat hypertension.
Once approved by the Food and Drug Administration, Addrenex
and its licensing partner Sciele Pharma, Inc. will launch
the drug in the first half of 2009.

JBoss Announces Product Expansion Deal
JBoss (www.jboss.com),
a division of Raleigh-based Red Hat, has announced its “Enterprise
Acceleration” initiative that includes the release of the
JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform and the sponsoring of three
new open source community projects. The National Institute
of Design and Mint in Italy (Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca
dello Stato) selected the JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform
to develop and implement software services in a SOA environment.

Defense Incubator Opening Satellite Offices
The Defense & Security Technology Accelerator (www.dstanc.org),
a Fayetteville-based business incubator for the military,
defense and homeland security sectors, is expanding. The
incubator opened a second location at the University of
North Carolina at Charlotte earlier this month and plans
to open a third location at North Carolina State University’s
Centennial Campus by March. The additional offices will
give DSTA clients access to research and technology epicenters
across the state.

IBM and N.C. State Team Up on Project Zero
At NC State (www.ncsu.edu),
IBM (www.ibm.com) has
announced the development of an incubator project called
Project Zero. The collaboration will teach students simplified
programming methods, rich web interfaces and enterprise-style
mash-ups required for today’s IT professions. Project Zero
will use Groovy and Java languages and platforms such as
Eclipse and Ruby on Rails to develop a time-slot signup
system without the need for in-depth architecting. IBM is
also working with UCLA on a similar project.

Wake Forest University Wins
NSF Grant
The National Science Foundation awarded Wake Forest University
(www.wakeforest.edu) a $596,679 grant to create a network
of private sector, nonprofit and local government partnerships
designed to fuel innovation and launch new entrepreneurial
ventures. Elizabeth Gatewood, director of the Office of
Entrepreneurship and Liberal Arts, and Deborah Best, dean
of the College of Arts and Sciences, will direct the three-year
project to foster innovation and entrepreneurship in a liberal
arts institution.
