Accipiter Acquired By Seattle Company
Raleigh-based Accipiter (www.accipiter.com), which sells ad serving technologies to web publishers in more than 20 countries, was acquired by Seattle-based Atlas, the technologies business unit of aQuantive, Inc. Accipiter’s outstanding shares were acquired in exchange for cash consideration of $30.3 million.

Accipiter was founded in 1996 and has operated independently since 2002. From 1996 to 2002, the Raleigh, North Carolina-based company operated under various corporate parents, including Engage and CMGI.

Integrian Strengthens Mobile Video Arsenal with Acquisition of Video Analytics Company
Morrisville-based Integrian Inc. (www.integrian.com), a mobile video camera technology innovation company, has acquired Signal Innovations Group (SIG), for an undisclosed amount.

SIG has developed high-performance tactical target recognition algorithms for air, ground and sea-based tier-one military operations. The SIG acquisition will be Integrian's third in the past two years, following the purchase of Digital Safety Technologies in March 2005 and Innovonics, Ltd. in late 2005.

Integrian is a CED member.

Cisco Acquires Digital Signage Software Firm
San Jose, Calif.-based Cisco (www.cisco.com) has acquired Tivella, a digital signage and systems firm for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition is subject to various standard closing conditions and is expected to close in the second quarter of Cisco's fiscal year 2007.

Tivella, which is privately held and has 10 employees, is based in Half Moon Bay, Calif. Cisco, which has a major campus in Research Triangle Park, sees digital signage as a growth opportunity area, providing customers with means of improving brand identity, customer loyalty, and in reaching target audiences.

Trana Discovery to Work with Southern Research Institute on Potential AIDS Drugs
Cary-based Trana Discovery (www.tranadiscovery.com), a drug discovery firm, and the Southern Research Institute have agreed to work together to seek potential drugs for the treatment of AIDS. Under the agreement, Trana will screen Southern Research’s extensive collection of nucleosides to identify antiinfectives with a novel mechanism of action.

Trana Discovery technology can help discover innovative classes of anti-infective compounds found in chemical libraries held by partner organizations. Trana's screening assays identify compounds that interrupt the lifecycle of pathogens through a new mechanism of action—the inhibition of transfer RNA (tRNA).

Tranzyme Pharma Receives European Patent
RTP-based Tranzyme Pharma (www.tranzyme.com), a developer of drugs to treat gastrointestinal and metabolic disorders, has received a European patent covering part of its drug discovery technology. The process received a U.S. patent earlier this year.

The patent protects key aspects of the Company’s core drug discovery technology, Macrocyclic Template Chemistry (MATCH™). MATCH™ is based on the synthesis of specific types of low-molecular weight, drug-like compounds called macrocycles.

Aldagen to Launch Clinical Trial Using Stem Cells to Combat Disease in Arms, Legs
Durham-based Aldagen (www.aldagen.com), a company focused on stem cell research, and the Texas Heart Institute are teaming up for a clinical trial in which humans will be tested for a potential treatment of limb ailments brought on by blood vessel problems.

The treatment is based on the use of purified adult stem cells drawn from bone marrow. The Food and Drug Administration approved the launch of the Phase II trial earlier this year. The stem cells are prepared for use by Aldagen’s proprietary technology known as Aldesort.

Metabolon Adds New Drug Screening Service
RTP-based Metabolon (www.metabolon.com) launched mVivo™, a service that allows researchers to gain a deeper understanding of the effects of investigational drugs during animal testing. With the introduction of mVivo, Metabolon completes their three product series of metabolomic drug safety and efficacy testing solutions, spanning the entire drug discovery and development workflow.

By analyzing microgram or microliter quantities of the target samples routinely isolated for evaluation, mVivo analysis provides valuable, non-biased information about a drug’s on- and off-target effects during animal studies.
