Pfizer Animal Health Agrees to Acquire Embrex, Inc. for $155 Million
Research Triangle Park-based Pfizer Animal Health, (http://www.pfizer.com) will acquire Embrex, Inc. for approximately $155 million. The two companies expect to complete the acquisition in the first quarter of 2007.
The merger will dedicate some of Pfizer’s research investment towards developing new vaccines that will address unmet needs of poultry producers and their birds. FairPoint Acquires Germantown Independent Telephone Company

Cyberlux Acquires Patent-Pending LED Technology
Durham-based Cyberlux Corporation (http://www.cyberlux.com), a provider of LED lighting solutions, has acquired SPE Technologies, Inc. a wholly owned subsidiary of UTEK Corporation for an undisclosed amount in a restricted stock transaction. Prior to the acquisition, SPE Technologies, Inc. held the worldwide exclusive license to a number of pending patents for the Scattered Photon Extraction™ (SPE) methodology, developed at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
These packages are designed to enable higher luminous efficacy with down-converted white light illuminators constructed with Light Emitting Diodes (LED). In contrast to traditional white LED packages, the SPE packages place the phosphor and/or down-conversion materials, such as quantum dots, at locations remote from the LEDs. The optic surrounding the LED’s die is shaped to extract a significant portion of the down-converted white light that is otherwise absorbed and lost as waste heat within the traditional LED packages.
3DSolve Inc. Wins MT2’s Top 100 Award for the Fourth Year in a Row
Cary-based 3Dsolve Inc. Gentris Corporation Expands GentriSure Line of Human Genomic DNA Reference Controls
Morrisville-based Gentris Corporation (http://www.gentris.com), a global provider of applied clinical pharmacogenomic services and diagnostic product solutions, will expand the GentriSure line of Human Genomic DNA Reference Controls to include relevant polymorphisms for the Cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9), Vitamin K Epoxide Reductase Complex Subunit 1 (VKORC1) and Cytochrome P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) genes.
Patient genotypes for CYP2C9 and VKORC1 are known to explain more than 50 percent of warfarin response. Approximately, one third of the 30 million patients prescribed warfarin in the United States each year carry a mutation of CYP2C9 that is closely associated with the drug’s adverse affects1. Genetic tests are available to identify patients at risk for experiencing adverse reactions to the drug; however, until the introduction of the GentriSure line of Human Genomic DNA Reference Controls, no consistent source of properly consented material had been available.
Gentris is a CED member.
