NeoButler Snags $5 Million Second Round
RTP's neoButler Inc., which helps Web surfers find information and services that meet their interests and needs, has closed on $5 million in second round venture financing, LocalBusiness.com reported. Franklin Street Partners led neoButler's round of funding, with participation from ITOCHU International, PSINet Ventures, and Draper Atlantic, which led neoButler's $1.5 million first round last October. Company officials said the funds will help fund operations next year as the company looks to expand sales, marketing and business development.
Sicel Gets Second Round Worth $3.5 Million
Sicel Technologies Inc., a Raleigh-based company looking to measure the effectiveness of cancer treatments, has raised a $3.5 million second round from local and European investors. Sicel's first product, made from components originally created for cell phones, measures radiation dosage to tumors in cancer treatment. Butron Advisors, based overseas in the United Kingdom, acted as the placement agent for Sicel's second round. Twenty percent of Sicel's $3 million round came from local investors, according to LocalBusiness.com.
Peopleclick Acquires Florida's Claybrooke & Associates
Peopleclick, a human resources company based in RTP, announced it has acquired Tampa, Fla.-based Claybrooke & Associates Inc. Although the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, Peopleclick officials told LocalBusiness.com that the acquisition was a multi-million dollar deal. Claybrooke & Associates, which plans to keep its 30 employees after the acquisition, has developed technologies to help human resources professionals in the job-hiring process. Peopleclick, which sells software that helps large companies manage the process of finding a job candidate, has raised $23 million in two rounds of funding.
Gadgetspace Reels in $5.5 Million
Durham-based GadgetSpace Inc. announced its initial seed and venture financing totaling $5.5 million. Southeast Interactive Technology Funds and The Aurora Funds led the funding, with additional investments from other prominent angel investors. The funding announcement marks Gadgetspace's introduction into market for the first time. Several customers and partners that already use Gadgetspace's wireless solutions include Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc., Clarkston, HAHT Commerce and others.
Four Triangle Companies Selected for VentureOne Premiere Conference

Imaginis, Siemens Launch New Women's Health Website
RTP-based Imaginis Corporation and partnered with The Medical Engineering Group of Siemens to launch the new version of the award winning Imaginis.com website. The new Website was launched in conjunction with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which takes places throughout the month of October. The new Imaginis.com site has been redesigned and significantly enhanced to increase ease of use. In addition, an all-new section of Imaginis.com has been created specifically for healthcare professionals involved in women's health.
Triangle Capital Venture Investments Total $555 Million for First Half of 2000, Up 48% Over 1999
CED recently released its second quarter Venture Capital Report which details venture capital activity and mergers and acquisitions in the Triangle and state as of early September. Data from various sources showed a total of $258 million invested in 31 Research Triangle-based companies in Q2 of 2000. Throughout North Carolina, a total of 41 companies obtained $689.76 million dollars including 402 million in financing that went to Charlotte's Carolina Broadband. Research Triangle-area companies participated in at least 16 mergers and acquisitions worth greater than $1.56 billion in Q2, according to the report, which also noted that since many of these transactions are confidential, is an incomplete total..
In the Year-to-Date report, a similar pattern of growth in the Triangle appears. A total of $555.69 million was invested in 67 Research Triangle-based companies in the first two quarters of 2000. Throughout North Carolina, a total of 92 companies obtained $1,117.62 million dollars. With 70 investments made in 67 companies in the Triangle during Q1 and Q2 2000, the number of deals through June of 2000 increased by 48% year over year, up from 47 deals in the same period in 1999.
SciQuest to Meet Lower End of Third-Quarter Revenue Expectations
SciQuest announced that its third-quarter 2000 revenues will be within the $19 million to $25 million range that analysts have set for the company. SciQuest officials said the company should be in the lower end of the expected range when they officially reveal their revenue data in early November. If SciQuest meets analysts' expectation, this would represent an increase of more than 50% over second-quarter 2000 revenues of $12.8 million.
