Strategic Partner Spotlight: Brooks Pierce

Each month CED spotlights strategic partners that help to propel Triangle entrepreneurial companies onto the national stage as successful businesses. One of our March Strategic Partner Spotlights is Brooks Pierce.

David Smyth, a Brooks Pierce partner and author of the “Cady Bar the Door” securities law blog, is the key represenative to CED from Brooks Pierce. David had this to say about CED’s most recent Tech Venture Conference: “The conference just made so clear what we already knew: it’s a really exciting time to be in RTP, and CED is the doorway to this entrepreneurial community.  I tried to meet with as many of the 80-ish companies in the Demo Room as I could, mostly because it was great fun and educational to hear their business plans. Many of the companies are fascinating and some will make many millions of dollars. CED does excellent work in shaping the business environment for the most worthy ones to thrive.”

About Brooks Pierce
We are a business law firm providing strategic counsel and solutions to our clients from offices in Greensboro, Raleigh, and Wilmington. We work with companies from start-ups to large multinational corporations, in industries including professional services, finance, transportation, banking, biotech, healthcare, construction, real estate, telecom. We’re known for our strong litigation, IP, and regulatory practices, and work hard to find elegant solutions to our clients’ most vexing problems.

Why does Brooks Pierce support CED as a strategic partner?
CED has long been one of the sparkplugs in the engine of North Carolina commerce. Just as citizens of the state, we want to be part of that and see that innovative sector of the economy grow.  We also work with many closely-held businesses, and see CED as a place to refer our clients for business advice and counsel, beyond what we provide as their attorneys.

How does Brooks Pierce help North Carolina entrepreneurs?
Our law firm culture is decidedly independent. We tend to hire smart people and then try to stay out of their way. In many respects, our entrepreneur clients see themselves in us and appreciate our approach to helping them overcome their legal hurdles, whether they are based in intellectual property issues, capital raising, employment matters, data privacy and security, or other regulatory concerns.

What does Brooks Pierce envision for the future of entrepreneurship?
We think geographic location will be come less and less important over time, and hope to position ourselves to be counsel to companies and individuals wherever they might be. Entrepreneurs will likely be able to scale technology to their benefit more quickly, but they will still need support in scaling the operational areas such as finance, human resources, marketing, and delivery. Entrepreneurs will seek experienced business partners for these key areas, and as legal counsel, we want to bring our experience to that table.
